Film Booking - Questions you may have wondered about the films we show
Ever wondered where the amazing films we show come from? Here from Zoe are some of the secrets of sourcing films.
Where do you get the licence to show films?

These are some of the distributors that we buy licences to show the films.

Artificial Eye (through BFI)
Axiom

British Federation of Film Societies [http://www.bffs.org.uk/]
offer a "Block-Booking" list of DVDs that are selected from various distributors.

British Film Institute (BFI) [http://www.bfi.org.uk]
Metrodome (through Filmbank)
Optimum (through Filmbank)
Paramount Home Entertainments [http://www.paramount.com/]
Peccadillo Pictures [http://www.peccapics.com/]
Soda (through BFI)
Tartan (through BFI)
Works (through Filmquest)
Can you show some of the extras that are on a DVD?
No, the licence to show the film is for the main feature film only. We cannot show any other DVD extras
Are there any other conditions that the film distributor make?
The terms and conditions of screenings at film society events is that they are shown to a membership society and do not allow people to pay on the door (with the exception of member's guests). There are also other conditions about limiting advertising of the screening. We are also not allowed to lend the discs to members who missed the screening. That would require a different type of licence.
You show films on DVD, are they bought/rented from the shops or LoveFilm like at home?
No, although the actual DVD copy is usually the same as sold or rented copies, we have to buy a licence to show the DVD at a public event. However, the notice at the beginning/end about not showing in Theatres, Hospitals, Oil Rigs, Prisons is on the DVD and it is not possible to hide when shown at our screenings.
Do the film distributors send a copy of the DVD?
Most distributors now offer different rates depending on whether a DVD is supplied or not. We usually buy a copy for screening as we have had problems with DVDs from the distributors skipping or sticking when played. A new copy is less likely to have any damage when played for the first time. If a DVD is supplied, it would normally need to be returned the next day to avoid any additional costs
Are there any vacancies on the Cheltenham Film Society committee to do the film booking?
Yes! Please apply to [filmbookings@cheltfilmsoc.org.uk
